Power Drill
A power drill is an electrical motor that rotates a replaceable drill bit to make a hole in wood, plastic, or metal. Alternately, a screwdriver tip can be installed to turn screws. The parts of a power drill include the handle, an on/off trigger with safety latch, a reversing switch for changing the rotation direction of the drill bit, a torque adjustment, and the chuck that holds the drill bit in place. Cordless drills are powered by a battery in the drill's handle.
-
The spinning action of a cordless drill can catch and tangle any loose objects. While operating any power tools, wear short sleeves, forgo jewelry and tie your hair back.

-
Secure your workpiece with clamps and a scrap piece of wood underneath. You don't want the wood or metal piece you are working on to shift while you're drilling.

-
Drill pilot holes. A pilot hole is a small hole that is drilled before a fastener enters the hole. This prevents splitting and ensures a proper fit. A pilot hole is smaller than the radius of the fastener that will be used in the hole. It's much easier to insert a screw into a pre-drilled pilot hole in a piece of wood. Your holes tend to be straighter, too. Plus, you'll have to apply less pressure to the power drill as the screw goes in, reducing the chances you'll slip.
the bit stuck in your wood.
-
Make sure the drill bit is properly inserted into the chuck and tightened firmly. With a loose bit, your power drill won't make a straight hole and it could slip and fall out, causing injury and a crooked hole.

-
When using BOTH the drill press and hand held, use a center punch to start holes. A center punch makes an indentation on the wood, giving your power drill a target for starting perfect holes and avoiding slippage.

-
Apply proper pressure to the drill. Your power drill should do most of the work, so be careful as too much force could snap the bit. If you push too hard, the power drill can slip or you can strain the motor. If you are having to apply too much pressure, please check if your bit is dull. Forstner bits will need more pressure than drill bits.

-
Make sure the drill is charged. If the drill dies while using it, please take out battery and place it on the charger as demonstrated by the Mrs. Jordan

-
Make sure it is fed straight. If you do not ensure that the drill is perfectly straight when drilling in, then you risk snapping the drill bit and getting
Handheld Drill and Drill press Worksheet

1. At what point in time should you clean the drill press and area?
2. Explain the difference between the two types of drills.
3. Why do you use a center punch?
4. Explain how to set up the drill properly for use.
5. How far should your hands be away from the bit at all times?
6. List 2 safety hazards when using the chuck key and how we avoid this.
7. List the steps. When you arrive at the drill press, what are a few things you must do first before you begin to drill?
8. Explain how much pressure you should apply when using a handheld Power drill?
9. What is a pilot hole?
10. When the battery in the hand held dies, what do you do?
